Mets acquire All-Star RHP Chris Bassitt

FLUSHING, NY, March 12, 2022 – The New York Mets tonight acquired All-Star RHP Chris Bassitt from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor leaguers RHP JT Ginn and RHP Adam Oller.

Bassitt was named to the American League All-Star Team and finished 10th in Cy Young’s vote last year. The 6-5, 217-pounder went 12-4 with a 3.15 ERA (55 ERA/157.1 innings) and 159 strikeouts in 27 starts. Bassitt led the AL with a .750 winning percentage. He led the AL in wins (12) and innings (151.0) before missing a month of the season when he was hit in the face by a line drive Aug. 17. Bassitt returned to the mound in late September to make two starts. .

Bassitt is 27-11 with a 3.26 ERA in 66 games, 63 starts over the past three years. He ranked second in the AL in winning percentage (.711), third in the ERA, fifth in OPS opponents (.661) and eighth in winning during that stretch (min. 300 innings).

He is one of nine pitchers since 2020 with 200 or more innings and an ERA below 3.00.

Bassitt set a career low in opponents’ batting average (.218) and opponents’ on-base percentage (.278) in 2021. According to ESPN Stats, he had the fifth-lowest batting average allowed ( .185) over 4 seams in 2021. among starting pitchers. Bassitt also went 7.0 or more innings 11 times last year, tied for fifth in the majors.

The Toledo, OH native went 5-2 with a 2.29 ERA (16 ERA/63.0 innings) in 11 starts during the shortened 2020 campaign, finishing eighth in AL Cy Young voting.

For his career, Bassitt is 31-25 with a 3.47 ERA (214 earned runs / 555.2 innings) and 504 strikeouts in 106 games, 93 starts over seven major league seasons with Athletics and the White Sox.

Ginn, 22, was originally drafted by the Mets in the second round of the 2020 Freshman Player Draft at Mississippi State University. He played in 18 games between Single-A St. Lucie and High-A Brooklyn last year, combining to go 5-5 with a 3.33 ERA (31 ERA/92.0 innings) with 22 walks and 81 strikeouts. Ginn was ranked the organization’s 6th-best prospect according to Baseball America.

Oller, 27, was selected by the Mets in the Triple-A phase of the Giants’ 2019 Rule 5 Draft. He made 23 starts between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse in 2021, posting a 9-4 record with a 3.45 ERA (46 ERA/120.0 innings) with 47 walks and 138 punches . He was selected to the 40-man list after the season.
