The 12e annualNourishing neighbors The campaign, a month-long initiative dedicated to helping food-insecure Bay Area communities, took place at 161 Safeway locations in northern California from November 20 to December 25, 2021.

“As our community continues to suffer the effects of the pandemic and the economic hardships it has created, it is essential to support the Bay Area food banks and our food insecure neighbors,” said said Stacy Owen, President and CEO of NBC Bay. Area and Telemundo 48. “We are deeply honored and privileged to do our part to help those in need. We appreciate our generous viewers, Safeway and its buyers, as well as our local food banks for helping meet the growing demand for food aid in our community.

“We are grateful to our generous customers who have joined us to fight hunger in the community,” said Karl Schroeder, president of the Safeway Northern California division. “Nourishing neighbors, working with NBC Bay Area, Telemundo 48 and our dedicated associates, help keep local food banks stocked and support meal distribution programs in Bay Area neighborhoods.

Throughout the 2021 campaign, Safeway buyers generously made contributions of $ 10 by simply removing a Nourishing neighbors leaflet of tear pads located at the cash desks and offered. Last year the Nourishing neighbors The food drive raised more than $ 3 million, or more than six million meals for those in need.

“With the lingering effects of the pandemic, Bay Area food banks estimate that we are still serving 1 million local residents,” said Regi Young, executive director of the Alameda County Community Food Bank. “We not only expect to be in response and recovery mode for years to come, but requirements are unlikely to ever drop below pre-pandemic levels. Partnerships like Nourishing neighbors are critical to the ability of all local food banks to keep our shelves well stocked and to ensure communities know both how to help and how to receive help when needed. We are very grateful to Safeway, NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48 for their efforts – and to everyone who participated in this holiday season.
