The Knights prop was retired for Sunday’s game against the Wests Tigers which the Knights won 14-10.

Knowles spoke about the events for the first time on Sunday and said that despite the attention, it had nothing to do with Klemmer’s swearing.

“The swearing wasn’t the problem,” Knowles told the Sydney Morning Heraldclearing up what he considered a big misconception to get out of the dramatic week that has been.

“That’s what everyone loses sight of. For me, it’s not personal with Klem. It doesn’t matter if it’s Kalyn Ponga, Nathan Cleary, Junior Paulo or Payne Haas. It doesn’t matter who it is.

“If someone puts themselves before the team, I will die forever of the fact that I will not tolerate this behavior.”

Knowles told the Herald he had a “very, very close” relationship with Klemmer and that ultimately all he was trying to do was “uphold the set of standards that this team needs.” .

“That’s what leaders do,” Knowles said.

“Sometimes leadership is difficult. Sometimes you have to put the value of the team first, no matter who the person is. If our club, our team, our management want success, they should thank me for trying to meet all the standards that this team needs.

Klemmer has been hit with a suspended fine for his actions but will be available for selection in next week’s clash with Brisbane with Knights manager Adam O’Brien confirming he will be hastily sacked .

“Yeah; that’s been sorted,” O’Brien said.

“There is a process; Sometimes when you go through a process you realize you can do it a different way, so you change it. So it was better to have gotten through that part.

“Big Klem, he’s accepted some responsibility for some of his stuff and he’s addressed the team. But definitely. It’s settled now; he’s back in the team.
