SSPD Press Release: Officer Involved in Filming of 2021 Burglary Home Invasion – SSPD News – Sandy Springs, GA

SANDY SPRINGS, GA (November 19, 2021) – Sandy Springs police officers were dispatched for an ongoing burglary at a Cameron Glen Dr. home. Upon arrival, officers located the suspect still inside the house. house and a confrontation took place.
The suspect ran to one of the police officers and stabbed him several times. A backup officer who witnessed the attack shot the suspect in an attempt to stop the stabbing. The injured officer was rushed to a local hospital where he was treated for his multiple injuries and was listed in stable condition. The suspect, shot at least once, was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive. A second officer was also injured as a result of a shrapnel that hit his hand.
Just after 8:30 a.m. this morning, residents of a Cameron Glen Drive home called 911 to report an intruder inside their home. Prior to receiving this call, officers were at the scene of another reported burglary nearby on Cameron Ridge Drive. These officers immediately reacted to the ongoing crime and arrived a few minutes later to find the suspect still inside. Officers tried less intrusive methods such as using a Taser to subdue the suspect; however, the Taser had no effect on him. After the suspect started stabbing the officer several times, at least one officer shot the suspect to stop the attack. Another officer managed to drag him out of the house and began providing first aid. Once the suspect was no longer a threat, officers provided first aid until paramedics arrived.
The residents of this house were not injured in this incident and are currently being questioned by our detectives. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been invited to participate in the investigation of the officer involved in the shooting. Sandy Springs Police detectives are investigating the break-in and the assault on these officers at the scene. Finally, our detectives were able to corroborate that this suspect was also responsible for the burglary at the Cameron Ridge Drive house earlier.
The suspect has been identified as Matthew Scott Lanz, 22, of Acworth. Mr. Lanz had no connection with this neighborhood and was unknown to the owners.
Matthew Lanz has been charged with the following:
- 1 burglary count in 1st degree for the Cameron Ridge Drive incident
- 1 burglary count in 1st degree for the Cameron Glen Drive incident
- 1 home invasion count in 1st degree
- 10 counts of obstruction
- 10 counts of aggravated assault on a police officer
- 10 counts of attempted murder of a police officer
- 1 count of possession of a knife during the commission of a crime
- 1 chief carrying a concealed weapon without a license
Once the suspect is released from hospital, he will be held in Fulton County Jail on the above counts.
